The Handmaid's Tale's Serena Actor Reflects On Series Ending With Season 6: "Emotional For Me To Say Goodbye"
Jesse and Yumyulack's desire to celebrate Halloween is upended when their family has to reckon with the consequences of the prior spooky special in The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October. Jesse is brought to life by Mary Mack, best known for her work as a stand-up comic, as well as starring in everything from Disney's Kiff to the Justin Roiland-created first-person shooter High on Life. Yumyulack is voiced by Sean Giambrone, who broke out with his starring turn in ABC's The Goldbergs and starred in everything from the live-action Kim Possible to Netflix's Jurassic World shows.
The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October serves as a sequel to the 2022 Halloween special, which ended with the titular alien family killing The Great Pumpkin for its tormenting them all, particularly Korvo, who was deathly afraid of the holiday. This comes back to haunt them when a witch arrives and curses them to transform into spooky creatures, all with the hopes of turning Korvo into the next Spirit of Halloween. When a mysterious third party shows up with ties to another holiday, though, lifting the witch's curse will be the least of the family's worries.

Hulu continues to be a big player among streamers with the arrival of new original programming along with classic movies and TV shows in October.
Alongside Mack and Giambrone, the ensemble Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October cast features the returns of Dan Stevens as Korvo, Thomas Middleditch as Terry and Sagan McMahan as the Pupa, alongside Ashley Adler, Star Trek: Lower Decks vet Eric Bauza, Peyton Crim and Manifest alum DazMann Still. Packed full of more Halloween season Easter eggs along with the trademark sci-fi comedy of the show, The Hunt for Brown October continues Solar Opposites' winning streak with its holiday specials.
In anticipation of its premiere, Screen Rant interviewed Mary Mack and Sean Giambrone to discuss The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October, Jesse's bigger season 5 arc and what that meant to Mack, the "bizarre" nature of Jesse and Yumyulack's spooky transformations, their very different feelings on the horror genre, and Giambrone's thoughts on a Goldbergs revival.
The Duo Were Surprised To Learn Of The Halloween Special Sequel
"...they created so many ideas and lore in that first one, and it was just really clever."
Screen Rant: I love that we're getting a Halloween Special Part 2, because the first one was such a fun ride from start to finish. Sean, I'll start with you and then Mary, what was it like when you saw the script for what this special would be?
Sean Giambrone: Oh, well, I loved it. I didn't know that we were going to do a sequel to a holiday special, but I just thought it was super smart, because they created so many ideas and lore in that first one, and it was just really clever. Everything that they did, it was cracking me up, and then introducing another holiday to duel with this holiday was just a really fun idea. And Halloween just has so many opportunities. Looking at all the backgrounds of each shot, there's a bunch of different puns, so I'm very happy that we did this sequel.
Mary Mack: Me too. Yeah, The Great Pumpkin, you can't go around bringing that back. And I mean, come on, you've got to explode as many pumpkins as you possibly can while you have the chance. So, I think that's pretty smart. Keep exploding those pumpkins. [Laughs]
Mack Is "Just Honored" By How The Writers Approach Jesse's Character
"...they know where I'm from, and they don't make me hide it."
If we get a trilogy of Halloween specials, I will certainly be very happy. So Mary, I'd actually like to turn to you next. I didn't really get the chance to talk with you for Solar Opposites season 5. I loved seeing Jesse get a bigger arc this season, especially as we learned she's sort of above Yum in the feeding chain of this team. What was it like getting to dive into that side of her this past season?
Mary Mack: You know, you record each of these episodes, and you're like, "Oh, I should have done this, this, and this. But I hope it all came across how they wanted it to come across." But I never realized I was the main character of a show until after the show happened, after we recorded it. And I was like, "Oh, wait a second. That was a lot of lines. I should have probably given them more takes." [Laughs]
But I love it so much, this show is so silly that I'm just honored. It's so fun and ridiculous, and also heartwarming, that I'm just honored to have a part in it, and I'm honored that they know my personality, and they know where I'm from, and they don't make me hide it. They go with it, and I think that's really great writers and great bosses too.
Yumyulack's Spooky Transformation Was So Crazy It Became "Too Uncomfortable"
"The boss was like, 'It's creeping me out. I'm uneasy watching this.'"
Sean, I'll turn to you next and dive into the Halloween special. So, you essentially turned into a slutty cat, and I'd love to hear what it's like trying to get into that mentality for recording.
Sean Giambrone: It was crazy, Grant. It was me and Sydney, the director, and she was like, "Okay, we're really going to try and get this. We want to get this sexy cat going." So, it was first to try and figure out what the voice would be like, so I was trying to just make it sultry or something, and then in my head I was thinking maybe some Britney Spears or something. But then Sydney's like, "Do valley girl, but now make it slightly more sorority."
She was saying all these terms, and they were meaning different things, and I had to keep going back, because it was too much of a sexy cat, it was too uncomfortable, really.[Laughs] The boss was like, "It's creeping me out. I'm uneasy watching this." So, they toned it down. It was a very unique experience for me. I've never tried to play that type of character before.
Mary Mack: I wish to God I could have been there in that room, Sean. I would've had so much fun watching you do that. [Laughs]
Sean Giambrone: I don't know, Mary, it was bizarre in that room.
Jesse's "Just Excited" To Be Part Of The Family's Halloween Hijinks (Except For Mack's Favorite Moment)
"Shame on those writers..."
And then, Mary, you transform into a werewolf, but I love that Jesse doesn't fully take power of it. I'd love to hear about finding that sort of balance between Jesse's good nature and then becoming this kind of monster.
Mary Mack: Yeah, I dunno, I think Jesse was just excited to be a part of Halloween in a new way. My favorite part is where she shaves her legs, and then instantly, it pops back. So, she tried to be kind of like a sexy werewolf for a moment, and you can't. You've got to commit. Shame on those writers for making me go all through shaving my legs, and then the hair pops right back. But I think she's along for the ride, and she's going to make the most of everything, so I liked being a werewolf.
Giambrone's A Major Horror Fan, But Mack Won't Go Anywhere Near The Genre
"Honest to goodness, I can't sleep when I watch them."
So, since we are talking about a Halloween special, and I am a horror genre fan, I'd love to hear from you both. What are some of your favorite horror movies or just spooky-type watches for around the Halloween season?
Mary Mack: Sean's got a bunch.
Sean Giambrone: Well, recently I've been watching a lot of horror the past couple months, even. But right now, watching some Harry Potter, which that second one was kind of spooky. But I also watched Hereditary, and that was freaky. I'm going to watch one of the Halloween movies, and then I watched Scream for the first time. I'm just bouncing around to all these first time viewings. I don't really repeat watch anything. For Christmas, I do, but not for Halloween. Do you, Mary?
Mary Mack: I can't watch scary movies. I won't sleep for two days. I can't even read a scary book. I can't even read a Stephen King book. When I was a little kid, I remember my siblings were much older, they made me watch all the Stephen King stuff, like The Shining, and I was so terrified, I could never watch 'em again. I could never watch scary movies. I had watched the old Nightmare on Elm Street when slumber parties were a thing when we were tiny.
We shouldn't have been able to watch these movies, and I remember Nightmare on Elm Street scared the — I could never watch anything after that. That was probably the last scary movie I watched. I like it when I go on Antiques Roadshow, and there's a scary antique, and you're like, "Whoa, I didn't know that would cost that much." That's as scary as I want to go. Honest to goodness, I can't sleep when I watch them.
I don't blame you. I remember, as a kid, seeing the Nightmare on Elm Street trailer with Johnny Depp's death in it, and I couldn't sleep for a few days, I was like, "Ah, I can't even lay down comfortably."
Mary Mack: Or when she's in the bathtub, and he comes through the bathtub with these razor hands, and he sucks her down through the bathtub. It's horrible! I'll probably get sued for this, but I don't care. It traumatized me the rest of my life.
Giambrone Would Go Back To The Goldbergs "In A Heartbeat"
"I don't know when it would happen..."
I see I'm almost out of time, so I did also want to ask you really quickly, Sean, one of your first breakout roles was The Goldbergs. It ended a year ago, but I'm curious if you've ever had thoughts about a revival in the future, since so many of these shows have come back after a little while of being off the air?
Sean Giambrone: Oh, I certainly would. I would hop back in a heartbeat. I don't know when it would happen, or if there would be any talks about it, but they always had some cool Halloween stuff and yeah, I certainly would be back. I'd love to go back to the '80s. I kind of miss it, because it's one of the greatest times. I'd definitely be up for it, but no, not sure when it would happen, but I'm game.
Mary Mack: No, I don't want Sean to do a remake of The Goldbergs. I have three scripts I want Sean to be in, I just haven't had time to tell him. He's not allowed! [Laughs]
Sean Giambrone: After my projects with Mary, then I'll be back for The Goldbergs. [Laughs]
Mary Mack: Yeah, once he does my scripts, he's open. But it's going to take a while.
About The Solar Opposites Halloween Special Part 2: The Hunt for Brown October
Spooky stuff is afoot when the SPIRIT OF HALLOWEEN starts to take over Korvo's life. “Solar Opposites” centers around a team of four aliens who are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Dan Stevens) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love TV, junk food and fun stuff. On season 5 of "Solar Opposites," now that the alien mission partners Terry and Korvo are married, the whole Solar Opposites team are focused on family values.
